One of the latest trends in online gaming is Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games or MMORPG Games. They are a new breed of role playing games and are usually hosted by the creator or publisher of the game – this person often has one or more roles in the game, although the other players may not know that. These hosted games differ from other online rpg games because they allow a huge number of players to participate.
There is no limit to teams or one-on-one relationships but two people cannot hold their interaction apart from the other players. The game and the other players go on even when one or more players are offline. So, each player joins a game and assumes a role. In MMORPG Games, each person’s role and the world around it continues and develops constantly in a virtual world that is not paused or halted by people coming and going.
The MMORPG Games grew out of Massively Multiplayer Online games, which allowed people playing video games to join other players around the world and play with them. These were almost one hundred percent video games in players like Play Station 3, Xbox 360 and PSP, which were connected to a modem or other internet connection. In the early 2000s, these games began to pop up online. Interaction was not necessary, but it was possible, as was a single player game. Suddenly, the free mmo was born. All a player needed was a computer and internet connection and they could enter the gaming world, which was not limited to any one type of system or player. Now browser based games can be played, for free, by anyone.
Once this world started to explode and everyone’s accessibility and connectivity became so easy, the possibilities were endless and role playing games (RPG) developed quickly. Now the MMORPG Games that used to be so segregated from society have become commonplace, even featured on television shows like C.S.I. and Law and Order. Some games have gone into the millions of players, like World of Warcraft, which had in excess of 12 million players in the fall of 2010.
One of the problems with the massive amounts of people is that if a game is on a single server, there can be loading problems once the numbers get higher. This results in the universe being copied onto more than one server and players are separated. This is called a sharded universe, and is usually the case with MMORPG Games. Many hosts end up charging players monthly or bimonthly fees to keep up all of the servers and support. Now, with the field growing, there are sites where gamers can get into an RPG for free using their current browser. One of the most progressive and easiest sites to use for a great game with almost no download time, has high-tech graphics and tons of interesting guests, is Shards of the Dreams. It literally takes seconds to join and enter the game in a fascinating world where your character can do anything your computer and imagination will allow.
